| I started "chasing" in 1994. I'll admit I was a "Yahoo", I just aimed for the red blob on the radar and never saw anything but rain and hail. In 2001, I met a bunch of fellow chasers who not only helped me lean to "chase properly", they also broadened my reaches, making a South Dakota chase a pretty normal occurrence. Storm structure is far more beautiful than rain or hail and the power of Mother Nature still amazes me. I chase to see this power in action, not for profit or thrill seeking or anything like that. To me, the best storms are those that avoid civilization. It's horrifying to see a storm destroy a home. However, that home was going to be destroyed whether or not I was there to witness it. Many chasers, myself included, report severe weather to the National Weather Service so that the Tornado Warning will be issued in time for people to get to safety.
From 2001 to 2004, I focused on video. In 2005 I decided that since all my chase partners were shooting video, I'd shoot stills. |
